Default Buying a new HD

First time HD buyer. Have always rode custom choppers and fell in love with the Breakout and everything you can do to it. So Im excited to join the HD nation! With it being my first HD I am wondering how the buying process goes with price.

I have a dealership that is giving me 2,000 off MSRP, then charging Freight and Prep; and then tax title license.

Is this Freight and Prep a normal charge? Just wondering. I figured there would be a price and then the normal charges to buy a vehicle.

Most dealers charge Freight and Prep both. Of course, both are negotiable...

Will most dealerships take the freight and Prep off the price?

Freight = 390
Prep = 850

Are these standard charges?

Hey Bud, I've only bought one new Harley before, for my wife. I just told the salesman and sales manager that I wanted to talk out the door price only. I didn't care how they wrote it up for their books, I just wanted to deal with OTD only. They resisted that for a while, but ultimately dealt with me that way when they realized I was going to walk otherwise. I like it better that way, they can't sneak any hidden costs in at the end if you've already agreed on an OTD price.

I like your user name, is that in reference to the funny car that was popular at US-30 and Great Lakes Dragaway back in the '60's and '70's?

Interesting question. I consider myself pretty astute when it comes to car buying. And even for those that aren't, there is so much information out there to guide car buyers. But I just purchased my first new HD as well back in March. I think I did ok, but i didn't have that feeling of power that comes with knowledge, as I do when buying a car.

Freight is standard.... that prep fee is high IMO. That said, I've seen it at $1200, mine was $0.

That prep fee is a good place to bargain.... it's all pure profit.

Don't be afraid to tell them you want some in store credit and/or your first 1000 mile service for free. The worst they can say is no.

They had to have it shipped to their location and they had to "prepare" it, right?

It's the definition of "prepare" that varies.
