Extended warranties.

Riding buddy of mine just mentioned he has an extended warranty on his 2005 Dyna.

So I am thinking I still have one year on my new Softail factory warranty but should I extend it?

Any one here have the extended warranty and is it worth it? What have you used it for and is it hassle free or did they moan and groan?

I think of an extended warranty the same way I think of going into a gambling casino. There are some winners now and then but the house ends up being the big winner.

I've yet to purchase an extended warranty on any vehicle I've purchased andso far(knock on wood) have not regretted it.

My thoughts are that if a part or an assembly survives the initial warranty period that is proof enough that there isn't a "faulty" part or assembly involved and with proper care and maintenance there's no reason to think a problem will show up further down the road.But, yes,it's still acrap-shoot !

Plan to keep mine well beyond the 2 year factory warranty and plan on putting plenty of miles on it.Have 10K in the first 7 months. Considering the changes that came with 2007, I opted for the extended warranty. I hope I never need it, but if I do............
Worry free riding for a long time. Also have the option to cancel w/ refund or transferrable if I sell. Just one way of looking at it.............

 

I passed on a 5 year warranty extension. Based on the $ figure versus the cost of the bike I just couldn't do it. I'm not a big fan of any extended warranty. I agree with the above statement comparing them to a casino.

It wouldn't hurt to find out what the warranty cost for your bike and what it covers. I know the one offered to me was somewhat comprehensive but to cover the wheels and tires cost extra.

 

I bought it for one reason, all the stories about the 110" motor. So far zero problems but it is a nice peace of mind.

I agree with the others though, chances are you will lose money with it but for a select few it will pay off. I guess the old saying "do you feel lucky".

I'll nutshell it: got the 5 year EW, that lowered my interest rate for the financing, saving almost enough in interest to offset the cost of the EW (so EW was essentially free), starter bit the dust this summer, just after the factory warranty ran out, no hassles, ~$1000.00 repair fixed for $57.00 ($50 deductible + tax).

Nick, one thing I learned here on the forum that I wished I knew at the time of purchase, is that figures are not "fixed" when dealing. Not only interest, but cost of service plans and warranties can be negotiated.

SteveM's previous reply mentioned being able to cancel it for a refund. The problem is, it is prorated from the date of purchase, even though it doesn't start being in force until after the initial warranty is over, which is two years. So I've paid for two years that gives me no coverage,so a seven year extended warranty is really only five years more.

In your case, don't consider buying it until in the lastmonth of your factory warranty, and then negotiate the price. I do believe it would be a valuable asset when selling the bike to a private party. If trading in, I'd cancel it first and recover the prorata amount, as for sure the dealer won't give you any more for it on trade in.

I bought the extended warranty just because of the on going cam problems with the TC88's, which have finally apparently been fixed on the TC96's.
