I agree with you, the whole thing could have and should have been avoided.

Yeah, there's probably half a dozen threads going on now.

I see they've all been merged together now.

Just for the hell of it? I think not.
All the articles that I read had clearly stated that traffic ahead was stopped. (Not uncommon for that to happen). One should allow for that with their following distance.
Expect the unexpected.

I agree completely with others that if you run into someone it is your responsibility. The possibility that someone could have used their vehicle (SUV) in an agressive manner isn't cool though.

So for me, like others here, give lots of space up ahead. Defensive driving all day every day.

Just for what its worth. Was talking to a rider who was on the same freeway, coming the other direction. He saw the scene and stopped to help.

Said that as traffic was slowing, one vehicle abruptly changed lanes to a position in front of the group and then braked. Sounds like the group was cut off - not sayin' whether it was deliberate or accidental.

Yeah, you need to be prepared for anything, and it was rush-hour density traffic (according to this rider, who lives in Salem, OR). But it would appear that one vehicle cut over in front of the group (according to the rider who spoke with people at the scene).

FWIW...

Nice, they might be good at riding fast and like it, but by looking at all those skid marks in the roadway its obvious they should have paid more attention to and pratice braking more. Thats what makes a big difference between a good rider and **** poor rider.

Being a "outlaw biker" is the easy part but riding the motorcycle is the hard part.
