Default Primary fluid

I recently got my first Harley. The bike was sitting for a couple years. I'm going to change the oil and trans fluid and was wondering if and how to change my primary fluid. It's a 2000 road king belt driven bike. Another thing is I'm not even sure what primary fluid is. And you don't have to remind me how stupid I am for not knowing. Thanks

U can use type F tranmission fluid. I do. Or just some 10W/40 regular (non synthetic) motor oil. Just 1 quart.

The plug is one of the bolts on the exterior of the housing at about 4pm. It looks slightly different than the other bolts on the primary case. Buy the shop manual it's an excellent investment on how to do many things yourself. The primany chain transfers the power from the motor to the belt drive via a chain soaked in a quart of primary oil. You can actually watch how it's done on You Tube also.

Another thing about using the transmission fluid is that it's pink. If the primary develops a leak then you'll know it's not the engine or transmission.

While you are changing the fluid, pull the inspection cover and check the tensioner for slack !!!

One more thing since you've never done this. Go to youtube.com and search harley maintenance. Lots of great videos on there. Also search google for harley maintenance expert village.

The primary plug is at 6 O'clock to the derby cover on my 99 RK. Maybe half way between 5 and 6, would that be 5:30? Dunno if they changed it in the 2000. I am curious tho, if they did actually change it to 4pm how does one distinguish that from 4am if they aren't using a military clock? But then again, IF they were using a military clock you would have said 1600 hours, yes?
