Default 79,000 miles too much?

i'm looking at a 99 road king for $6500. it was kept in very good condition, very clean, no leaks that i can see. HD rebuilt the top end about 8000 miles ago.

before i take the plunge on a bike with so many miles anyone have any experience with road kings pushing 100K in a few years?

is 79K too many miles too risky?

The only scary thing for you is worn out crank (considering frame is good). It will cost about 2-3K to replace. Probably closer to 3K because crank is about 1200 (all parts will be 1500)
So ask some good mechanic how to check it or ask mechanic to check it for you.

I agree. You could gamble $50 on a shop inspection for overall health & end up buying it or running. Gauge the owner for yourself & determine if he's honest or deceptive.
You might end up with a nice bike @ a fair price!
Good luck.
Hatch.

i'm going to check it out tomorrow and see if he'll let me take it to a shop to get checked over. i know how to look over a bike but things like a crank about to go or other internal engine or transmission problems i'll miss.

i can probably get him down to 6K even and it's a pristine bike, even if i had to toss 3K into it two years down the line it wouldn't be the end of the world.

If the bike is super clean and it checks out probably not a bad deal. In the future if the motor craters, then do a reman exchange from HD and get a practically new motor and you will be money a head.

Not sure if I would invest $3k in a partially rebuilt motor with that many miles on it. Just my preference though, I would spend a little more and get as much new as I could. You still would have a nice bike for a lot less than new.

79,000? Uh-oh........
That's how long it took to get my Shovel housebroken.
And......
Don't tell my bagger 79,000 is too much. It will probably apply for social security.

I wouldn't let mileage alone discourage me from buyin' the bike. Lot's of folks get well over a hundred thousand. If never changed, it's probably due for a drive belt. Very good idea to have it checked out by a mechanic, but it should have good compression if the top end was just redone and there still is no guaranty something won't break soon. It is a Harley tho... parts are available.

I hope 79K isn't too many miles for a Harley. I just turned mine over to 71K over the weekend and will pushing 80K by the end of the year. I'm hoping I can get over 100K before I have to redo the top end.

There are better deals out there, be patient.

I sold my very nice 98 egc last December for 7k, had 36k miles and 14k on a harley reman motor. Picked up my very nice 2000 road king with 14k miles last week for 7k.
