But that would be a D404, not a D402. They may look alike but the D402 has the HD name on it, the D404 doesn't so the D402 is proprietary to HD I don't have a clue if they are the same compounds or not.

Default dunlop 402 correct installation

What is the correct view of the turning thread for the rear tire. Does the mounting go V thread down or...... the V thread up.

I think my motorcycle shop installed the rear tire backwards. D402- MU90B16

I put 6,000 on my rear 402 on the Street Glide. It was getting near bald and I don't ride aggressively, burn outs or two up. I keep the pressure monitored as well. I think I'll be switching brands next time, that's not an acceptable amount of miles for the price.

There should be an arrow showing the correct direction of tire rotation on the tire somewhere.

my Harley branded 402 never got that mileage -- actually it was less than the non branded 402 which I ran 3 before changing to E3s

Default Dunlop D404 tire popped at 125kph (70mph)

My riding partner put a set of 404's on his 07 RG and at 4000 mi were completely worn out. The 404 is good for a lightweight bike but wears quickly on the heavier bikes. I get good tread wear I think because of keeping the tire pressures where the owners manual recommends.
my wife and i were riding home on the highway 2 weeks ago when the rear tire on my HD Heritage Classic popped doing 70mph. The rear rim of the bike immediately contacted the road surface sending the rear end careening 2 feet to one side and then 4 feet back the other way while I frantically counter-steered to bring the front wheel back inline with the rear which seemed to work as we did not lay the bike down and slowly rumbled to a stop by the side of the highway.
The next day i discovered the rear popped tire was a Dunlop D404 and Dunlop (now) says " do not use these on Harleys or other big bikes as they do not have belts inside them ".

Use a D401 or a D402 but never put on a D404 unless you want to try the counter-steering method at 70mph I described above.

D402 is designed for Harley Davidson, the D404 although similar, is different, thepy don't make the MU85 series in the 77h load rating . It depends also on the bike you ride, I have used a 404 before but it was on a different bike, I currently have a 402 on the rear of my Bagger now and have about 8000 miles on it and am shopping for a new one. I am going back to Elite 3 of American Elite.

I'd like to know just how you guys are getting such fantastic mileage out of a rear 402. I've been running them on my '94 FLSTN since the bike was new. I've worn out 25 of them and am currently running rear 402 number 26 on the bike, so I guess that gives me a large sample. I typically get anywhere from 7,500 to 9,000 out of a rear tire, and replace the front 402 every second rear tire.

I weigh 155#, ride solo and run 38-40 psi in the back tire. I'm 63 and generally ride like the old man I am. Yes, they're REAL 402s, all bought through my local H-D dealer.

The stock rear tires (180/65B16) for 2009 & above Tour bikes are terrific tires for mileage & rain under normal riding. My friends & I have consistently gotten minimum 15K miles out them.
