Question engine vin number

looking to buy a 1988 flhs. owner says engine vin doesnt match frame because its a hd remanufactured engine. the engine vin is punched not engraved as follows: *gelt319639* i'd appreciate any help you can give me. thanks, dave

Think you can call Harley Factory with the vin to check.

The reman engines usually get the same vin as it had before. Different engine in your case probably, but no big deal.

They had a lot of issues with the early EVO cases and lot got replaced . Yours may be in that batch , call the MoCo with the numbers they will have a history .

That don't look right to me. The vin should start with something like this.

I think he means that is the engine number. As with cars, a bike with numbers that don't match isn't worth as much. For a recent bike, doesn't make that big of a difference. For an old bike, it makes all the difference.
