Default Well, it finally happened

Out for a ride today, several cages in front of me did a panic stop. Cruising with feet on the highway pegs, I grabbed the front brake to slow down while moving to the mid controls for the rear brake.
Must have squeezed the front brake too much...front wheel locked and I went off the high side. Must have slid some before barrel rolling.

I finally stopped my slide in time to see the SB still sliding toward the cars. Wondered if it would stop before rearending the last car. Thankfully it did stop. Can't imagine what it looked like to the cars behind me.
I was more mad about the damage to the Harley than thinking about my cuts and road rash.

Several men help me move the bike off the road. One was kind enough to grab some paper towels so I could stop some of the bleeding.

Three local police cars, one ambulance with EMT's and a fire truck. Certainly got some attention. One of the LEO's is a M/C club member, 'Nam Knights.
They were wondering from where they knew me.
I am the chief range safety officer at my local gun range. PD used our range to re-qualify with their AR-15's.

They assessed the bike and thought it was rideable so after getting wrapped with gauze and tape, made my way home.

Had to go pick up the wife and make a trip to the local CVS for sterile dressings to clean and redress all the cuts, scrapes and general road rash.

I still have to do an in depth check of the Bob. I do know the handlebar is bent, windscreen smashed, brake pedal bent and right foot peg badly scraped.

No wobble so I think the forks are ok. It rode in a straight line on the way home.

Wow- that was a "good" crash. Glad you're not banged up too bad and not to upset to get back on right away.

Had to get back home somehow.

Forgot to include that the S&S aircleaner cover is trashed and there is a dent in the gas tank. H-D logo is all scraped too.

Glad you are ok. Probably be sore in the morning. Make sure you get to a doctor and get fully checked out. The bike can be fixed. But I feel your pain (not literally, thank goodness).

That kind of situation always worried me when I had highway pegs on my old FXR so I rarely used them, glad you weren't banged up to much.

ord sgt,
I did what you did before you did it.
Know that road rash will stick to cotton bedding when you finally get to sleep.
Pulling the fibers out of the road burn is worse than sliding down the road.
Don’t tell anybody, but the 2nd night I slept in my wife’s nylon slip. It helped a lot.

Most importnat GLAD U MADE IT THRU the high side.

Since u went thru this expereince:

1) Have u practiced panic stops in the 30 days? 60 days? ??
2) Do u wish u had ABS brakes? Or are u now going to get them?
3) Will u now start practicing panic stops.
4) Could you somehow (ur best guess) have seen this coming?

Pls understand, I am not saying anything abt ur habits, just trying to get a better handle on those who have had accidents, to look deeper into them to see if we can learn something by it.

Know what I mean? I am not being a wise guy or condescending. Just trying to learn from it.

Thank you,

BuzzCap7

You should use 4"X4" or larger Telfa pads on raw wounds, not cotton.

Exactly. Stretch of road with no traffic is where they are meant to be used.
Years ago when I ran a set of highway pegs, I would move my feet back to the controls when traffic dictated it. The added stopping distance getting to the controls is what was on my mind while riding.
