Default Fork lock trouble

I stopped at a bar to see a friend and when I got out my fork lock wouldn't release the key. I could put the key in it and turn it to unlock the fork but the key wouldn't turn all the way vertical or release the key. I messed with it for about ten minutes with no luck. Thank goodness I carry both keys so I just unlocked the fork and left the one key in there and stuck the other key in the ignition and rode home. I was a bit nervous that somehow during a left turn the key would jimmy itself into the locked position and lock my fork up on me and dump me but luckily I got home with no issues. I'll be taking it up to Harley ASAP. Doubt it will be covered under warranty but maybe I'll get lucky. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else. It's a stupid problem to have, nonetheless it is still a problem. Have fun, ride safe.

I know exactly what you are experiencing. I too have had my key stick where it doesn't want to come out. Unlike you, I was able to "jiggle" the key and it let go. I'll be watching this thread closely!

After you lock the fork, wiggle the bars slightly left-right. The key will release. Mine has done this since brand new.

if your bike is still under warranty it should most certainly be covered by it. thats what its for.

I have to turn my forks a little to the right, when it's all the way left, for my fork lock to work, locking or unlocking.

Thanks for the advice guys. I wiggled and jiggled and turned and shook like a chubby stripper on stage. That damn key wouldn't come out. I'll be getting in to Harley ASAP. Thanks again. Have fun, ride safe.

I talked to the guys at Harley and they said to bring it in. They will try to fix it but if they can't they'll have to replace it. If they replace the fork lock they said they'll have to change out the ignition too and order me two new keys that work the matching fork lock and ignition. This could take around three weeks to get the parts and keys in. I really hope they can fix it. I've done some reading and apparently I'm not the only one who has had this problem as I figured. Thing is, some were fixable and some needed replaced. One good thing is that they said my warranty would cover the work. I just really hate to be without my bike for three weeks. I ride everyday. I can ride it if I unlock it and leave the key in the lock and use my second key in the ignition but I'm worried about the possibility of the key working its way into the locked position during a left turn and dumping me. I don't know what the chances of that happening are but it sure would suck if it did. Either way, this is a stupid problem to have nonetheless it is still a problem.

Likely a little wd40 and 3-in-1 oil will do the trick

That cured my problem. Took a couple applications but finally freed up. On another note I DID have to replace my ignition lock while on a trip away from home. Just bought the most heavy duty cable lock I could find at HD and locked it to a secure post when I was away from the bike.
