Does Oil have a shelf life?

Default Does Oil have a shelf life?

like Amsoil, Redline, Mobil 1 etc., If so, whats the max time to keep shelved before it starts breaking down after purchased new from store?

This is just a guess but in a suitable container I would think it would be good for about 100 years.

Sounds about right. The reason gasoline goes bad is that the more volatile compounds in it evaporate, leaving the "thicker" less volatile compounds behind. There's nothing really volatile in motor oil to evaporate.

Everything I've read says 5 years. After that it separates.

What's the Shelf Life on Opened Bottles of Mobil 1?
Mobil 1 has a maximum shelf life of 5 years for un-opened containers.

It vastly matters what type of environment its in. Hot & cold vs the consistent temp/humidity level like my closet. Usually 5 years in a controlled enviroment.

On a quart bottle I have, it says that if you have any questions, call 1-800-ASK-MOBIL. Call them and ask.
