Default can anyone give me a good reason NOT to stay at 88"?

Setting everything up for some work to the Dyna over the winter. Right now she is a stock 1999 carb'd 88" TC nearing 40K. I am not trying to build a HP monster....I am just trying to make the engine do what it does only better.

I am gonna do some SE 204 cams, head work, bump the comp to 9.8-10:1, SE cam hyd cam plate, SE oil pump and new lifters.

I am trying to decide if I want to bother with going big bore. I am very happy with the 88....but I'd like to freshen up the rings while its all apart and if I'm gonna big bore it, now is the time.

Factory take off jugs with pistons that were barley broken in can be readily found for under 200.00.

Punching out my jugs is only is just under 600.00 so the money is not that big of a deal....can anyone give me a good reason NOT to stay at 88"?

Thanks

I went to 95" on mine and did some head work myself, 211 cams and a Mikuni HS42 carb.
The mods were fairly inexpensive since I did all the work myself and the motor really woke up.
Now....Having said all of that, The 88" motor will run pretty damn strong with cams and headwork and a good 2 into 1 pipe.

Displacement is a small part of it, but how the engine is set up and how efficient it is, is much more important.
I had a '99 Electra Glide Standard for a year or so and all I did was put cams in it and a Thunderheader and open up the intake....The bike ran great and I put 30,000 trouble free miles on it in a year.

Usually the guys that say "There's no replacement for displacement" only say that because they heard someone else that didn't know what they were talking about either say it.
I built an 80" EVO a few years ago that very few big inch motors could stay with up to about 100 MPH +.

Have fun!

Sure there is. Forced induction, high compression and a properly built engine, and other means will get you more power than just a displacement bump.

Do what you want. I was going to upgrade to 95 c.i., but the bike I just picked up had 12k miles on it, and now I only have 19k on it. I cammed it with an S&S .509 and had some mild head work done to it and it keeps up with the club brothers. The power range of the cams kicks in about 3500 r.p.m. so the acceleration is adequate and the other day I hit triple digits keeping up on a run. Until something breaks or wears out I am going to leave it at 88 unless a bushel basket of money shows up on my porch.

The best thing about the engine work I had done to my 88"er is the smile I get every time I twist the throttle. Depending on what you have done, the performance difference between the built engine and the 'ole 88"er can be huge.
