Default Stripped nut/bolt - muffler clamp to header pipe

Hi all,

I'm a newbie so this is my first post!

I'm trying to get my mufflers off, but the bolt seems to be stipped on the clamp that holds the muffler (slip-on) to the header pipe. The nut just continuously turns but the clamp does not loosen.

I have 2 questions for you:

1. Does anyone have any advice on getting this bolt off? Keep in mind, I am not very mechanically inclined and I have limited tools.

2. Once I get it off I will likely need to replace the clamp and bolt...does anyone have a part number for this?

Attached is a pic of the exact piece I am talking about.

Thanks!
Steve

Looks like you may have rounded the corners off the nut by using cheap tools or the wrong sized wrench or socket. You are using SAE wrenchs right? Get a 6 point socket, 9/16ths best I recall and it should come right off. If not get a hacksaw and get busy. Torca clamps aren't that expensive.

hey frito,

thanks for the feedback...i just double checked and i am using the 9/16, which is still catching the nut, but she just keeps turning!

when you say get out the hacksaw, what is the best part to start hacking...the bolt, or the clamp itself? i could get a better angle on the clamp, but the bolt would be tricky (not much room to play).

grateful for any tips for those much more experienced than me!

cheers,
steve

If a 6 point socket won't get the job done, cut whatever is easiest to get to. It'll give the same result regardless of what you cut.

Spray some PB Blaster on it. If the stud is turning, reach around to the back side and hold the square end of the stud with vise grips.
