Is it possible to remove the muffler clamp without removing the muffler? And install a new one?
I removed the slip on's to re-adjust them and make sure I didn't have a leak. In the process, the rear muffler clamp nut (the top pipe) was rusted to the bolt. I was able to remove the nut, but both the bolt and nut are stripped out and useless now. I didn't realize this until after I reassembled everything. The slip on's are on there perfectly, and the heatshields are lined up better than ever before so I REALLY DON'T want to remove everything to replace this clamp.
I tried pulling the bolt through the clamp, but couldn't get it out. I was kinda tired of working on it and I had to get a replacement anyway, so I wrapped it up for the night. I'll pick up a new clamp tomorrow.
If I can get the bolt out, I could just put a new one in and leave the clamp on the pipe.
Should have got some loose-nut on there as early as possible. But if your talking about a HD torca clamp, yes the whole thing should come apart. the clamp can be pried open and re-bent into shape no problem. Get someone to hold the clamp and play with it a bit with an ordinary pair of channel locks while you tap the bolt out or wiggle it out twisting it with another pair of plers........and some beer!
P.S. If you lined it up once you should be able to line it up fine again bro and just discard the old rusty clamp.
Yeah, I got some new clamps, saw how it was locked on there and figured it would just be easier/faster to remove the one muffler instead of trying to pry the bolt apart. I don't have a saw that could fit in there to cut the bolt off.
I don't think the heatshields are lined up as perfectly as they were before I had to fix that clamp, but they're still better than they were before I decided to re-align them and try to fix a leak so I think it was still a success!
Before this project, the heatshields lined up 80%. Then lined up 100% before I had to remove it again for that clamp... now they're only 99.7%.
