Default Sputtering and Popping Road King

Hey guy's just trying to see if I'm heading in the right direction! I just got a 1997 Road King that had been sitting for several years and wasn't running. I cleaned all the old fuel out and replaced fuel pump and all the fuel lines and it's alive, however on acceleration it sputters pretty bad and when I down shift it pops like theres un burnt fuel in the exhaust. I just purchased intake manifold gaskets and plan on putting them in but I thouht I'd drop a line in here and see if anyone has had this problem and what fixed it! Thanks for any help!!

Once you install the gaskets and rule out any intake leaks, if the problem still exists, test for a faulty crank position sensor.

How about the carb? Maybe the previous owner rejetted the carb in an attempt to fix a lean mixture resulting from a previous botched intake manfold gasket change? Keep in mind that if you replace the gaskets properly it could aggravate your problem IF the carb had been rejetted.

Sounds like the carburetor needs a good cleaning, gasoline gets gummy after setting for a few years and internal lines get clogged. Wash carb well with carburetor cleaner and force air through all lines. I will assure you that this will solve your problem. Good Luck!

Hey guys thanks for the replies I forgot to mention that its fuel injected! I replaced the gaskets and rode for a little bit, the sputtering when accelerating seems to be better bit still popping when down shifting especially when I'm riding the wife around? How do I check the crank shaft position sensor?

Still sounds like an air leak. That said, be very careful not to strip the intake manifold bolts. The intake manifold can warp (or be warped) when tightening - if you can, check it's mating surface on a very flat surface.
