Got a gear and it's not what I was told it was
I've been selling off my old NOS parts and I've got a mystery. I've got this pinion gear that came in a box, wrapped in the original paper. The box says the part number is 24045-78 which would make it for a Shovel. But I'm told that it's for a Sportster.
So what I need to know is which is it and how do I find out the correct part number? I've got it up for sale right now on ebay. I don't know how to put a photo here.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciate.

Helpful information is in the 1979 to 1985 Factory Service Manual 99848-85, page 3-39 and 3-40, and in the 1979 to 1985 Factory Parts Catalog 99451-85A page 17.
When measured with a micrometer over .105" gauge pins, a green Sportster pinion gear should be between 1.2641" and 1.2631".
Part number is 24059-74 for green, 1979-85. These were not color coded before 1979 according to info in the parts catalogs.
You can simulate gauge pins by using common nails. When i needed to do this i went to the building materials store and worked thru a bucket of ~1" nails until i found several that were closest to .105" OD. They all looked the same but the measurements varied quite a bit. I chose the two that were closest.
To measure place the gauge pins in grooves on opposite sides of the gear and measure the distance across from pin to pin outside. If it is within the range 1.2641" and 1.2631" then it is a green Sportster pinion gear.
EDIT: I have a green Sportster pinion gear. Without gauge pins it measures 1.2330" across the teeth, and 0.8800" length. One end has smaller OD than the other - this does not show in your pic as it is the other end.
