Default Swing arm help

I can't get the pre load on the swing arm bearings. I cranked down the pivot bolt with a breaker bar but the swing arm won't stay horizontal. There is no side slop. I know the bearing, spacers and dust seals are all correct. I thought as it was tightened the vertical play would tighten up. What gives? I have a video but don't know how to post it.

How do you attach a video to your thread?
Thanks

Upload the video to YouTube. Then Copy/Paste the link into your post here.

I sent you a PM yesterday. Have you read it yet?

Default Mick, I haven't read your pm yet.

Check out the video and you can see how loose the vertical movement is. There is no side to side slop, but the up and down is rather easy. Should I be concerned.
Thanks,

The swingarm is not supposed to stay horizontal. You connect it all up then using the spring scale (fish scale)weigh how much it takes to lift to horizontal. Then you tighten so that it adds one or two pounds of drag. Example it takes 3 pounds to lift to horizontal with bearing loose. Tighten until it takes 4 or 5 pounds to lift to horizontal.

It looks Ok to me. No side to side movement is most important. It would be useful tho to measure the "weight" of it with a fish scale as FilthyLucre suggests. That is what the FSM says to do.

I've got the pivot bolt tightened down with a breaker bar, can't go any tighter. Even though it's really tight, I can't get any more vertical resistance. The side to side is firm, no slop. If I weigh it, I'm just going to get the weight of the arm, I won't be able to get it any tighter. It doesn't seem like the tightening of the pivot bolt nut is bringing the bearings into the frame. Never adjusted one like this so I'm not sure. I'm putting this bike back together for my 15 year old son so I want to make sure its right.

Thanks,
Ranjet

You don't get the pre load with the pivot bolt. You get it with the locknut that the pivot bolt slides through.

Excerpt from Service manual.

Insert bearing outer spacer (8), shoulder facing in.
Assemble and tighten bearing lock nut - right (7), and
then back off one full turn. Insert pivot bolt nut (10).
With a punch, tighten bearing lock nut - left (9) until
snug. Stake lock in three places. Position rear fork
in place on motorcycle and at the same time position
pivot bolt nut (10), shoulder in crankcase recess.
With lock washes (2) in place, coat pivot bolt (I) with
grease. Insert in rear fork assembly and tighten securely
Weigh the extreme rear end of fork by attaching
spring scale and raising fork to horizontal position
with centerline of frame. Take scale reading and

tighten lock nut - right (7)

sufficient amount to provide
from one to two pounds drag on the bearing. For
example, if rear end of fork weighs three and onehalf
pounds with bearings free, bearings should be
adjusted tight enough to increase weight of fork to
four and one-half or five and one-half pounds as fork
is lifted to horizontal position, Assemble screw (4),
washer (5), and lock washer (6).
