Default 73 rebuild

I'm mounting the rear fender on the xlch. Does the fender mount bracket go on the frame first then the fender, or do I put on the fender then the bracket on the inside of the fender to hold it to the frame. I know there is a rubber buffer in between there too, just not sure in which order it goes. See the pics to clarify.
Thanks
Ranjet

There are exactly four [4] attachment points for the rear fender - these are to the fender rails, two on each side.

The fender does not attach to the frame. Look in the parts catalog and you will see that there are no parts there to attach the fender, just two bolts for the bracket.

The two big holes in the front/bottom edge of the fender are to give the heads of the two bolts that hold the buffer and bracket in place some space to move around as the fender flexes.

If you attach the fender to the frame like many guys do the fender will crack, especially with a passenger on the bike putting their entire weight on the fender.

The buffer and the bracket install between the fender and the frame.

This is little known and much misunderstood, but true.

Thanks Mick
I don't have the buffer, I wonder if I could just make one?

The buffer is a fine-holed sponge. It squishes down completely. Just use like an ordinary sponge.
