Default When do you switch to FULL Synthetic Motor Oil ???

Only asking because it's a new motor design... When are you switching to FULL Synthetic Motor Oil, i.e. Amsoil/ RedLine etc... 1000 or 5000 ????

I always have done the 1000 mile service with Amsoil, but I am thinking about going with a semi-Synthetic like SYN3 until 5000.

Your thoughts and why ??? Thanks in advance.... Jim

I changed the oil with HD 360 at 500 miles, then switched to Mobile 1 at 1,000.

I switch at 5K for no real reason other than habit. The dealer throws in the 1K on a new bike purchase. If you want syn they will do it for an extra charge.

I don't because I'm cheap and when I put syn in at the 5K I get it for $5/qt. which is about 1/3 the price of HD syn oil.

I can do Valvoline 20/50 mc mineral oil for $3.98/qt. so I don't know how much longer I can hold out on the extra 4-5 dollars per interval.

The reason that I am not hung up on mineral oil or syn is that BOTH will get the engine to 100K + with absolutely the same amount of protection and wear.

Longitudinal studies have shown there is no reduction in maintenance between the two. There is a slight increase in mpg with syn because of less drag from its thinner viscosity at operating temperature.

I am at 6,500 on the 17 RGS so I did the syn at 5k. I like that the brand I get is in 4 gallon jugs and I just dump one in. In the TC's it is always at full. With the M8 I had to add 8 oz.

Makes no difference that old worn out story about break in has so been buried. No reason to do until the 1000 mile service.
