My wife and I just put closed to 2,000 miles on my 09 SG--and we normally don't do more than 300 miles on any given weekend. I made the following "adjustments/upgrades" to make sure she would enjoy the ride:
1-Added adapter kits for heated gear. She was able to plug in a jacket liner whenever she wanted.
2-Found a used two-up Mustang Lo-Rider seat with rider backrest. Sent it to Meancity Cycles for upgrades (added gel for both of us and extra padding to get her up higher so she wouldn't be staring at my melon-head the whole time.
3-took the Tour Pak passenger wraparound backrest pad to a local upholstery shop and paid them $100 to re-work the padding and re-shape it. Now she has lumbar support.
4-purchased a kit that relocates the Tour Pak backwards up to 4". Now she has more leg room and we don't bump helmets when we stop.
5-Sent the stock HK radio to Iron Cross to get an auxiliary output jack added. Purchased a Sena Blue Tooth unit that transmits stereo music to both helmets.
6-Bought a set of Scala Q3 Rider communication sets so that we can share music and talk as needed. Much better than shouting into the wind and turning your head to hear that a bathroom break is needed.
7-Purchased a decent set of passenger floorboards and added Kuryaken's adjustable footpegs. Now she has multiple foot positions so that she can extend her legs as needed.
Bottom line for me was I had to be sure she was comfortable, or I knew I'd be miserable. The modifications I did ended up being very worthwhile. I spent under $1,000 doing them and had fun in the process working on the bike. It's now ready to go for long trips or I can easily strip it down and go solo.
I hope this helps at least give you some ideas, good luck!
