Default Fork oil and capacity??

I pulled the front end of my 99 Heritage apart and replaced the bushings and seals. What is the capacity of a "dry" fork? Also, what weight of oil can I fill with? Can it be a generic oil or does it need to be HD? Is there a method to bleed the system afterwards?

Thank you

Hi Jinxie. I have a 99 FXST which is not the same front fork as yours, but I think that the 99 Service Manual I have covers all 99 softail models. I'm at work and don't have the manual here, but I will look for the capacities for your fork when I arrive home. I hope you could wait...

Hi Jinxie,

The service manual says that you must put 11,5 oz. (340 ml) in a wet fork for your model and year. Manual don't say anything about a dry fork. Maybe someone could help you more about how much oil you must add.

Manual says that you must use hydraulic fork oil, type "E", H-D Part No. 99884-80/16 oz, but I think that a lot of other brands will have a similar oil. Just search for a similar one if you don't want to make the MOCO richer than it is.

Regards,

I know it's too late, but next time use a measuring cup when you empty...that way you're assured to put pretty much the exact same amount back in.

Actually, the seals were leaking so bad when i bought the bike, 1 side had about 2oz and the other side had about 4oz. I totally diassembled the front end and found the bushings were pretty scored up too. Hopefully a good polish on the tubes and they will be OK. They look alright. It definately will be better than it was!!!
