I spoke to a guy at Redline and he said the 20w60 would actually make the engine run a bit hotter because of extra drag. He said the 20w50 is all you need in high heat climates as long as it's a synthetic oil.
Somebody is talking bullshit. But who? Anyone actually know anything about this? Please note, I'm not being critical of any of the posters, just all the conflicting info we hear.
Glad to see this topic come up as I am just about to order a kit. My dilemma was 50 or 6o weight. I saw the " for motors with higher clearances " statement, and began to wonder if it was right for an 09 FLHTCU with 4500 miles on it. I was however attracted to the " hotter climates " statement as I'm in N. Texas and Holy Cow it gets hot here. But I think I'll stick with the 20W50.
The 20w60 is for motors with higher clearances, like older engines. He said to me you could use it but it's not necessary in a late model bike.
Go to Redline's website and that's what they say - 20w60 for built or high mileage engines.
I spoke to them too and was told to stay with 20w50 unless I had something like an S&S
Evo style engine. I'm near Palm Springs and it'll be a hundred and plenty this weekend so
I had the same concerns. Damn sure glad we can split lanes here in SoCal - one of the
few good laws here but cagers are trying to change it. Redline's V-Twin Power Packs
come both ways - 20w50 or 60 - and some online peddlers sell them for $100 delivered.
