I recently sold a 2005 XL1200C which I used Mobil 1 15w50 red cap (now gold cap) in both the primary and cranck case with no problems.

I have a new 2006 FXSTI TC88B. First big twin


I understand HD Syn 3 can be used in all three holes. (crank case, primary and transmission.


Does anyone have any experience using Mobil 1 15w50 in all three holes?

It appears the the Mobil 1 gear oil 75w90 when converted to engine oil specs is about the same in viscosity as the 15w50.

It's probably Ok for the engine, definitely fine for the primary but use the 75w90 for the trans. That stuff will shear down in the trans very quickly because the additive package is not designed for a gearbox. I use the Mobil1Vtwin in my engine...it's excellent. But I use the redline MTL in the primary and the shockproof heavy gear oil in the trans. My $.02

 

I have had all 3 boxes filled with 15W50 and my buddy uses that as well. I put the 75W90 gear oil in there the last time. There is no difference in the shifting or anything...still noisy, so I don't know. I think I am switching to redline possibly in all 3 boxes.

 

Mobil 1 15-50 great for the engine, Mobil 1 75-90 best for the transmission, syn of any kind is just overkill in the primary. Remember, you are dealing with friction discs clutch so why put super slippery in there. Syn may even have additives in it that might cause problems with the clutch discs. I just filled mine with RevTech primary oil ($4.99). Someone on here said, "You could probably do with Wesson oil in the primary".

 

I use Mobile 1 V Twin 20W 50 in all three holes. No problems. I used the gear ol in the transmission and couldn't tell any difference in that and the 20W 50. The Mobile 1 V Twin seems to hold up better than Syn 3. Mobile 1 V Twin is supposed to have additives for use in the primary.

 

I just received the recommendations back from redline. 20W50 in crank, shockproof heavy in tranny, MTL in primary. I think I will stick with the mobil 1 20w50 in the crank instead of their stuff.

 

I'm not suggesting you shouldn't use syn in the primary. I'm just saying "why?" Are you going to have a super slippery chain and sprockets? I think H-D first came up with this as a marketing idea to get people to spend more money needlessly. They really only said it would be more convienent to only have to buy one oil. Oh, now I have to walk over there and pick up a bottle of primary oil, what a bother! They didn't say it would work better in the primary or enhance anything. They just want more money.

As for the tranny, gear oil goes in there. Again, not a bother.

 

OK, It's time for the oil to be changed, Has anyone used Kendall 50W?
My DAD always used this oil in his HydraGlide years back.

Ive been reading the thread and everybody likes the Synthetic Oil, but It seems a bit expensive to me, But it ia a HARLEY Right?

I'm a Auto Technician and I understand the qualities of the synthetic but...

My 06 was a rental and I can't get any history from the stealer just the service dates... Not the type of oil used...

Bike runs great in the morning, cool but in the evening NOISEY.... and the oil pressure is real low at idle. (Is this normal?) (My first Harley)
I also think i hear cam chain chatter... I hear this is a problem with twin cam engines....

I have a thing about rocker noise... My 71 SS El Camino 496, 500+ HP Full Trunion Roller Rockers, was a quiet as a mouse...

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

When I worked on cars (25 years) we were called mechanics. Everyone is a technician now days.

I haven't heard anyone using Kendall oil. I would strongly advise a good synthetic but not you know who's. There are lots of good brands but make sure it is at least a grade 4 synthetic. Most are. Unless your bike has tons of miles I would also suggest a multi-weight oil like 20-50. 15-50 flows faster and is the same at the upper end as the other. It is expensive but it will last longer and do a better job in the long run. Your engine will run a little cooler and some of the noise will be less noticeable.

Concerning the engine noise - no one likes my remarks about all the trouble I've had with engine noise.

 

Don't run the straight 50. It doesn't flow as well at startup, which is when tons of engine wear occur. Stick with a multi-vis.
