Default Need More Clutch Cable Slack to change Lever

I ride a 2001 HD Sportster 883 Hugger and am in the process of changing my brake and clutch levers out.. pretty basic. However, I can't get enough slack on my clutch cable to pull it off to change (where the according cover over the lock nut is). I've rotated it all the way up and can't go up anymore. Is there another place that I can loosen my cable?

Thanks in advance!

Have you pulled the pin the lever pivots on? Circlip holds it in on my 01 dyna.

Yes, I have. I need approximately a centimeter more of slack and I'll be able to get it out. Thanks!

Pull the cable as far out as you can, hold it with some pliers - pull the lever in - then as you let it out pull the cable away. Not the right way but it works. If you have the correct cable you should have plenty of adjustment woithout doing what I suggested.

Just tried the plier trick and still couldn't create enough slack! just barely short. See what you were getting at with it tho. I'm guessing my cable is just too short - I bought the bike used and they must have put on too short of a cable...

An alternative to TSheff's suggestion is to pull the lever against the bar, then take a firm grip on the cable outer with the other hand and, as you slowly release the lever, pull on the outer, which should enable you to disengage it from the handlebar housing.
