I bought a '95 DWG last October. It has Screaming Eagle heads, a Mikuni carb, Baker 6 speed transmission, not much of it is left stock.

I have some questions about the gearing on it. Whomever owned it previously has it setup as a drag bike. At 60 mph, I am around 3200 RPM in 6th gear. In 5th gear I am around 3k RPM for 50mph, 4th, 3k RPM for 40 mph etc.


I'd like to change the gearing to something more practical for longer rides, but don't really know much about it. I can change the oil and do maintenance, but haven't ever done anything beyond that. I know guys that have done a lot, so I can get help doing whatever, but I'd like to understand it myself first.

Any links or advice would be greatly appreciated. I have heard that you can change the pulleys, but I am not sure what I have on there, or what I would need.

The place to start is to open the primary and find out what your primary drive ratio is; count the "teeth" on the motor and clutch sprockets; same for your secondary drive ratio; trans and wheel pulley teeth. Once you have the ratios, you can evaluate what makes the most sense to bring the ratios back in line with stock.

 

After you've done what djl recommends we can help chose better gearing.
