Default Gearing

Hello All,
I am thinking of changing the gearing on my 03 Heritage for lower rpms on the hwy. My wife rides her own scoot, I weigh less than 200lbs and always ride solo. I sometimes try to shift to 5th when I'm alread there because the motor loafs like its in 4th.
The cheapest would be the compensator sprocket, would there be enough primary chain to go up 1 or 2 teeth? Next would be the drive pulley, If I go up one tooth, would the stock belt work. I ask the local shop, they didn't know but said I should spend $2500 for the 6 spd. No Thanks! Anyway, if anybody has any experience with this, it would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mikey

Well, I may be off base here but I believe that you would have to put only one more tooth on the front belt sprocket to get what you are after... I don't know what you should do with the primary sprockets... and I don't know if anyone makes different front drive sprockets for Harleys... all I ever though about was the 6 speed, but your idea could be a good one. I live in the Appalachians and I would miss the low first gear, though, I think.

Ive thought about this too. By adding 2 teeth to the front pully youre rpm will drop about 6%

I know you don't want to think about a new tranny, but Baker makes an upgrade 6 speed that's "supposed" to be better than the HD unit thats now standard on all the 07's. It uses a different set of primary sprockets to increase the overall efficiency of the drivetrain so there is less power loss across the entire gear spread. If I remember right 6th gear is actually the same as your present 5th, but the different primary sizes results in it actually being an overdrive.
Unfortunatly like most of their stuff its really high quality stuff, so it ain't cheap.
Not sure how much they want for it, but its gotta be up to at least the $2 to $3K range.
But if you can find out some info on it, you might be able to duplicate their results with other parts.

Actually sounds like a good idea. JP probably offers different size pullys and I am sure it would be easy to change out the primary chain or go to a drive belt. Let us know what you do and how it works.
