Tire width opinions
I have a 92 Heritage Classic I am rebuilding bottom up (nickel and dime build) I'm not sure what to do, I picked up a fat boy fender cheep and may do some customizing to it and install it. If I do that, I want a wider tire, though. I saw online they sell pulley spacers (front and rear) and the brain's motors started turning. I realize if I went this route, I would need a thinner drive belt. Does anyone know the stock size of a 92 evolution softail's drive belt? Has anyone out there done this or have any advice to give? I cannot afford a new wider swingarm. I don't want a 200 rear tire, just something a little wider ya know. I have stock 16" spoke rims, for now, what's the widest I could run on those without problem? Thanks, Glenn

Hi Glenn, stock drive belt is 1 1/2". You can only use thin spacers, as the rear pulley has to clear the swingarm, so don't get carried away! With the wheel installed it would not be wise to use spacers more than half the current clearance, which isn't much! The widest tyre you can install on a stock 3" rim is 150/80, which will keep rolling diameter the same as stock.
Later bikes have a narrower rear belt, however the later stock Harley pulley won't fit your current wheel, although you may be able to get a custom pulley that will fit.
