Default 1987 Sportster clutch help Please

Hello.....I recently picked up a 1987 sportster 883 and am going through it. Changed the primary and checked tension which was easy enough (except for the stripped drain pliug). Next was going to be the oil change which I plan to do, but I am having one hell of a time adjusting the clutch. Thinking now, but hoping not, that it needs replacing. But hoping maybe someone has some isnight on this as i am quite new to this. I tried 2 methods. Loosten the flat head screw all the way out and tyhen in 1/2 turn. After this is was really noth grabbing. So I Brought it in some more, then in until it seemed like it was starting to get tight and went out 1/2 turn from there. Much better, but still slips When I get on it.
Any insight? And if a new clutch is needed, is this something I could do, with not much experience? I'm 38, but haven't had too much practice with this.
Thnx again

Did you collapse the clutch cable first and then readjust it after the clutch adjustment?
