Default Broken Fifth Gear

Well, here's a new one. Riding today and all the sudden it got really hard to downshift; upshifting was fine. Turned around and headed home. Fortunately was less than a mile away. About 500 feet from the drive, a terrible squealing started from the drive. Threw in the clutch and it stopped but the bike was dragging. Got it on the porch and tore the primary off. The front drive pulley was loose and one of the bolts on the lock ring was sheared off. Tried loosen or tighten the pulley nut but the impact gun would just very slowly turn it in about 1/8" increments. Had to heat it up to get it to come off. Turned out that the sprocket nut didn't come lose. Fifth gear broke and the threaded portion separated from the the pulley spline and slid out about 1/8". When the impact gun was turning the nut slowly, it was actually spinning the threaded portion of fifth gear on the main shaft. Never saw that one before. Gonna tear the tranny apart tomorrow.

Well, tore it apart the next day. Everything is fine except for fifth gear. The other three shaft bearings are a little loose so I'm waiting for parts to replace all the bearings and seals. It's time for a total rebuild anyways. . .
