Default Main Gear WTF?

So, 10k after my engine and chassis upgrades to the bagger, I developed a transmission leak.. Belt was adjusted properly, possibly a little toward the loose side.. Primary bearing and seal are good, no problem.I figured it would be a simple seal, you know, the one I could have done while I was there and didn't......... Anyhow, after I decided to tear into it to replace the main gear seal, I found the damn thing was broken!! Friggin nut and threads sheared off the gear.. Anyone seen this before?? Any particular reason??? I'll be removing the gearset this weekend and ordering a new gear, I suppose.. I'll go ahead and do the Baker pawl and primary bearing along with the main gear and bearing, anything else?? I'm really needing to keep the cost down, after my "winter snowball", so a 6spd isn't in the cards this time around..

Maybe somebody used a rattle-gun instead of a torque wrench and over tightened the nut?

That would be my pick but really, they go so tight anyway that it would have to be some serious rattle gun action going down!

6 speed is a waste of your dollars in my opinion....the 5 is fine and the extra gear doesn't give you anything (apart form more gears to count) that you can't get by other means and with a low-revving bike like a Harley its not actually necessary.....except for new bikes to get through EPA approval.

The money would be better spent on Tequila and cheap hookers......

Yea, I was having difficulty believing that too. I'll definitely be careful with it when I put it together... We've only got another two months or so of good riding weather and I've got some decent rides planned, so this is pretty bad timing... I'm in general agreeance on the 6spd, my riding habits actually make it a reasonable idea for this bike... The price is just insane.. I only paid $5k for the bike, its really hard to wrap my mind around dropping another 50% on a gearset.. Tequila and hookers sound much more fun....

Thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind.. Are you talking about the shafts and all?

I've found that there is a difference between the baggers and everything else from this vintage.. Andrews offers the replacement for 35029-91A, for most models.. However, they don't list a replacement for the 35029-94 for the baggers.. Anyone know what the difference is?? It appears that there was a HCR gearset option, which mine falls into, but I'm not sure if that effects 5th gear.. Some sites state the -91A fits my bike, but I'm not 100% convinced based on the other info I've seen..

I have seen this happen it was caused by a bent mainshaft

I think the deal is that Andrews does not make high contact gears (high contact gears were designed to reduce noise).

If you use the Andrews main drive gear, you should use the corresponding gear on the countershaft, Andrews 296555, or OEM 35626-79B.

If it were me, I would get the gearset from texashillcountry...

And also replace the big ball bearing.

Have you removed a main drive gear from a transmission before?

Well, D has me thinking I need to get with you THC... PM incoming...

By the way, Dan, no I hadn't had one out before.. But, honestly, removing the damn exhaust was the worst part.. I was hell bent to only remove what I had to, made more work for me in the long run.. Anyhow, I made a puller/pusher and it really wasn't all that bad..
