Default help please.

Hi everyone. I have a 99 paughco rigid frame with a 1979 74 ci shovelhead with a 5 speed tranny off a softail. I am going to run a 180 rear wheel and im trying to figure out spacing of the wheel and offset of the sprockets and transmission. I have 1/2" spacer between the engine and inner primary and a 1/2" offset transmission plate. So do i need to also space the compensating sprocket and the rear belt drive sprocket.

In short yes, if you move one component out they all have to be spaced out. My only question would be do you really have to space it out to make a 180 fit? It's not like you are putting a 250 on there then again you are working with in the limitations of the frame.

Im not sure. I bought this kind of like a rolling chasis kit only not rolling. Have been told i have to space everything. I know i have to space the rear belt sprocket because right now the belt rubs the tire. I need at least 3/8" for this but 1/2" would be better cause as far as i know the tire will grow as I ride it. Just dont know what size compensating shat extention to get. Would it also be 1/2" makes sence to me that it would but im new to this.

If you have the engine and trans in the frame, I would also put the rear wheel in. That way you can align things and see where you need spacers. Being told stuff is no substitute for working it out with the hardware in front of you!

I have squeezed a 160 rear tyre into my Glide and retained a belt. There are also Sporty owners who have managed to instal 180 tyres in recent models, so what you are looking to do should be doable, without too many problems.

As for your rear wheel, this is my 160, with the rear pulley installed. You can see the edge of the pulley, which to the track of the belt gives me 3/16" of clearance, between tyre and belt. That is a bit tight, so I have since added a thin spacer. To work out how thick a spacer you need on your pulley, install it on the wheel and look down the edge of the tyre, as in my photo. I suggest you use a spacer that brings the pulley out so you can just see daylight down the back of the pulley, between it and the edge of the tyre.

The tyre won't grow wider as you ride, if anything it will get very slightly narrower.

from personal experience. If it is a standard width paughco frame they only go up to a 160 with a chain final drive not a belt. I was running into fitment issued on my rigid with a 140 rear tire and a belt and had to switch to a chain.

Thanks. Misfit. It is a wide frame paughco for wide rear wheel i got all kinds of room was just wondering about the spacing of the compensating shaft extention and how big of a spacer is need. Now i hear i may not need one as i can just space my rear pully out the quarter inch i need to clear the belt. My wheel will be off centre a quarter inch but i have been told that is withing tolerance. Still reserching this though
