i'm changing over my primary cover to a black one. bike has 5500 miles on it (fatboy lo) just wondering if anyone has had a bad experience with certain gaskets not making a good seal or whatnot. huge price differences, can find a gasket for $18 or $60, just curious if i have to drop more $$ or if the cheaper one is ok.
also, anything else i need to buy to prepare for the cover swap? derby cover gasket and primary cover gasket should be it, right?
Removed my primary cover & re-used OEM gasket several times before having to replace it. Replaced original primary gasket about 6 years ago with cheap after market gasket & it had to be replaced upon the first cover removal. - Rob

If it looks good, why not reuse? It is an easy fix if it ever does start to fail.
HD metal core gaskets are something Harley did a really good job with. We have primaries off and on a couple times a day around here.We reuse the gaskets over and over again in testing out new products and the Harley gaskets have performed flawlessly.

Yes, stick with the Harley OEM gaskets if you decide to replace, but I have reused my primary a few times and no problems..........the OEM derby gasket is a THICK *** rubber piece that shoves into the cover groove and I have never replaced it (still looks perfect 13k on odometer).
I have to agree with above, the HD primary and cam cover gaskets are the best, able to reuse several times. I also went with an alternative once and was sorely disappointed.
I used the Cometic inner primary gasket and it leaked. Went back to OEM and no leak and they looked identical.
Yup I would always turn to HD for their gaskets. I used Cometic for my 106 but just noticed a better quality with the HD stuff. I can say that the one thing harley truly nailed were their gasket design (whomever they outsource it to).
