Enjoying your time definitely sounds better than the alternative that you gave! Who watches dog shows anyway??

That is pretty organized......I just get up and see which way the weather looks good, look for roads with curves, moutains, google things to do and see along the route....finish coffee, fire up bikes and ride.....usually about 4:00 figure where we are at, where we might be in the next hour, google cheap hotels or if the weather is good look for campgrounds......lay up for the night........next day, repeat.

This year we did it a little different....we actually stayed an extra day about every 3rd day and touristed.......was a good trip......21 days, 3000 miles and 11 states......enjoyed your trip......everybody should take one.

I think the trick is you have to give yourself an hour, gives you about a 50-70 mile window on towns to locate lodging......also options.....we have stayed at cheap hotels, motel 6's, we have camping gear and camp....another over looked option that we have had good luck with is Airbnb.......also smart phone is mandatory.

What is "Airbnb" ? Not familiar with that one. Trying to find a good app for hotels. I used to use hotels.com but I've found there are too many hotels not in their network. Didn't stay in a town one time cause they didn't list a single hotel there. Then when we rode through that town the day after we saw 4 hotels right along the freeway.

because i am doing a similar trip, I re read this, every page and post for the 2nd time. Great read and documentation of your trip. i do a decent job of tracking things during the day but when it comes time to type them in a forum, i lose my patience. i am going to practice doing better on my trips as this was awesome for planning our trip in August!

Quality thread. I plan on referring back to this thread when I take my West coast trip next summer.

Thank you for the nice comments. It was a PITA to maintain, mostly due to bad WiFi in hotels. Had I been able to post everyday/night I think I would have had most of it done before we got home if not all. Basically the second week was done after I was home. At that point I felt committed to getting it done for me and all of you. Best record of any trip we have ever done, not sure I would do it again but glad I did it this time.

I also have a small road diary that we take on trips. I write down mileage, start and end point for the day and any highlights. Decent reference for future trips, especially if you are taking the same route.
