Default Advice for PCH ride.

We are looking to rent bikes in Portland and ride to San Francisco. This would be a 6-7 day ride with plenty of sight seeing. We did a killer ride last year around the south east states but made the mistake of too much riding and too little vacationing. I have rented through Eagle rider before and they expect a 495 dollar fee per bike for a point to point ride. We do get HOG and AMA discounts to it isn't that big of deal. better than trying to get our bikes out there and back in 9 days.
I want to see the red wood forest and enjoy the while my buddy and his wife would like to explore and end up in San fran for a day without bikes. we plan to do this stage this year and hitting San fran to mexico in the future.
Looking at first week of august at this point.
In pre planning mode...

I did similar ride 3 years ago. I flew in to Seattle from NJ rented bike from Eagle Rider. Went North to Olympia WA then stated heading south to LA. Redwood National Park is beautiful you will enjoy it. There are lots of comp ground and some cabins. If you want to stay in cabin make your reservations early. I rode coast line hwy till San Fran where my brother met me with his bike. From San Fran we took 101 south till we got to Monterey CA then we took HWY1 south to Big Sur then LA. It was great ride. Enjoy your trip you will love it. Coast line North of San Fran was much better ride then south of San Fran IMHO.

You are in for a really nice ride. I've done that rude many times. When do you expect to do this ride? And what specific questions do you have about San Francisco or the area?

You should do the Lost Coast in California. I believe it starts in Ferndale. It is a gorgeous ride and drops into the cliffs overlooking the ocean, then drops down to sea level and pops out in the redwoods. The coast is a very slow ride, so plan extra time.

Spend one night in Mendocino. You will be glad you did. I love that place.

The yellow building is Mendocino Hotel. I recommend staying there.

Visit Glass Beach

One small piece of advice about the toll on the Golden Gate Bridge. There are no longer any toll collectors. You just ride through the toll gate. Locals like myself have a transponder that records my passage through the toll gate and charges my account. You will however have to go to the Golden Gate Bridge web site and pay the toll online within 48 hours of passing through the toll gate.

We are looking at doing the North part first. Looking for places to stay( bed and breakfast, inns, etc.) Nothing specific about san fran other than the obvious tourist traps but was hoping for some cool out of the way things that may be interesting. Looking forward to the oregon coast for sure. we are heading up to Mt Scott OK this weekend and plan to do some discussion regarding the PCH trip this summer. i am printing out the thread and pics to keep the excitement up. thanks folks, especially the tip on the GG bridge.

We did a lot of what you are doing last summer, beautiful all around. I would recommend finding the time to detour inland and go to Mt. St. Helens, serious WOW moment.

Here is the link to our thread of the trip, beginning and end will give you much information for your trip. Middle was all inland and away from where you are going. But we did start in Seattle and ended in San Francisco.
