You could always cross at the Port Huron/Sarnia bridges into Ontario. Then it would be a nice ride on the north shore of Lake Erie to Niagara Falls.
As a word of caution the route plan through Hamilton, Mississauga & Toronto to head north you might want to reconsider. It is all highways and the traffic is horrendous. Once you get north of Toronto it is what is referred to as cottage country. Busy and treacherous highways for us motorcyclists. We avoid riding them at all costs!
A nice ride is through Tobermory, take a ferry to Manitoulin (1-1/2 hrs) and then up to Espanola and the Trans Canada highway.

Correct on the tunnel, but anything has to be better than Rt. 2 across the northern part of Ohio. it just ain't cool.

 

Just a suggestion. but check out the ferry from South Baymouth (Little Current) Manitoulin Island to Tobermory, Ontario. This route would relieve the Cottage area north of Toronto and take you though some beautiful southern Ontario farm country.

The crazy Toronto traffic up in cottage country. We are heading up to Tobermory on Wednesday for the ferry to Maniltoulin.

Took a trip up the east side of Michigan (23) went on to Sault Ste Marie and back the west side (31) a couple weeks ago. Very pretty ride. Would do it again in a heart beat!. Have fun, be safe and enjoy the view which ever roads/way you go!

 

Thanks all-Just got back. Detroit along the Erie to Niagara falls, up to Tobermory for the Ferry, thru the Soo to Manistee (no rooms avail)/Manistique, down to Elk Rapids, over to Bay City and around the Thumb back to Detroit. Many good stops and suggestions from the forum! One additional suggestion (for those who search Road Trip threads) is to see the Freighters who pass thru the canal (in front of Freighters Eatery and Taproom) near the Sarnia/Port Huron Bridge. Cool Beans.
