Default 83 fxrs help

Okay so the PO swapped the inner primary for an flt set. Shop told me the oem part number for the og inner casing was 60654-82a. I picked up a 60602-79a. are these interchangeable? I was told it came off an 83 fxr with 5 speed as well, I just want to be sure before I tear mine down

so, before you start wrenching, is there a problem with the primary now? Why do you want to work on this to begin with?

well, he swapped the oem inner case for an flt case, so I'd have to drill to reinstall mid controls. I'd really just prefer to take it back to og condition since I'd have to take it apart to drill anyway

It seems odd that a 5-speed inner primary would have a -79 part number.

Yea, that's why I wanted to ask, because I thought the 79 were all 4 speed parts

79 is correct for 1980 parts.. parts are made the year before release

I was thinking the 79a/b/c inner primaries were all 4 speed For 79-84? the guy that sold me the inner case had it on an 83 w/ 5 speed tranny from what he said

I thought they were model year designations, but regardless, the 5-speed FXR didn't come out until 1982.

I've got an 80 FLT. That's the first year for a FLT and the first model with a 5 speed. FLTs were never set up for controls like your FX. The current p/n for my inner housing is 60643-81B, but it's original p/n was most likely -80. 1980 FLHs were still 4 speeds, and had different primary housings (60508- )

it looks to me like the current p/n for an '83 FXRS is 69653- 82A.
