Busted oil vent fitting 1980 FXEF
1980 FXEF 80"
Was working on sealing up the primary today. Pulled the vent hose off the middle of the inner primary and sealed it up (no problem). That hose went to the "T". The upper part of the T goes to the vent off the oil tank. The lower part of the T went to the vent on the engine case, just above the oil pump. (See line number 3 in the manual). While trying the remove the hose clamp (overly exuberant twisting of the clamp) at the engine case and broke the damn brass fitting off.
I gently tapped an easy out into it, but it just won't bite enough to turn whats left of the brass fitting out out of the case.
Sooo, since that fitting goes directly into the case, I'm a little leary about drilling and tapping. Should I be?
Thanks,
Jim

if you drill you will put bits and pieces into the oil pumps return gearing that fitting is directly above the pumps intake
use heat and you might want to try a tap in easy out as the turn type are not as strong and snap off easyer
lots of those type fittings make a snap sound when they brake free - and that is the issue it has a taper thread and its at a lock stop -- heat it real good first than install the easy out GOOD LUCK with that done it seen it many times

The fitting has a pipe thread ( which has a taper ) and once moved even just a little it will/should come right out. EZ Outs have such a degree of taper that they can/will expand the piece that you're trying to get out and the brass fitting is very soft. I'd suggest a "spline" type of extractor ( they work very well ). Remember that all extractors are hardened steel and if you break one off you're in trouble. Drilling should be a last resort. Pack the area with grease and try a left handed drill bit if you must drill. Good Luck
