17x6 rear wheel + 200mm tire (stock 06 FXST rear) on Deuce
hi all -
after a lot of reaserch, asking around and measuring, I have succesfully installed stock FXST 17x6 rear wheel + 200mm Dunlop on a Deuce, using STOCK belt + pulley. it is a direct fit with a minor modification on the pulley, swing arm brake tab and brake caliper. the wheels is almost centered, run straight, fills the rear fender with no rubbing after 300 miles trip during thanksgiving. here are the details:
part list:
HARLEY DAVIDSON 41647-06 Chrome Solid Disc Forged Wheel-17" Rear - 3/4" ID bearings
Dunlop Sportmax D205 200/55-17 Rear Tire
Drag Specialties rear axle spacer - 3/4" ID, 1 1/4" long
modification steps:
shave the stock pulley:
the area where the pulley makes contact with the wheels is shaved off 7/16"
the outter belt guide is shaved off about 1/16" - refer to pic
refer to the detailed pulley pictures below
grind the swingarm, on the brake caliper tab - just to make the tire clear
grind brake caliper foot - just to make the rim and valve stems clear
note: there is no measurement for this, i did a trial and error
refer to the detail brake caliper/swingarm tab picture below
installation:
right side: use stock spacer.
note: do not install the rotor on the wheels first. slide it AFTER the wheel/tires + right spacer + brake caliper are already aligned in the swingarm, and then put in the axle. this is beacuse the 17" diameter tires doesnt have any room.
left side:
pulley can be bolted on the wheels prior installation. use the new 1 1/4" spacers. use stock rear axle.
I needed to widen the swingarm about 1/4" using scissor jack to ease the installation. if went back to the normal width
alignment:
the tire is "almost" straight. the left adjuster is a bit shorther than the right, i cant make ithem the same distance as the belt would rub the wheels. it is now have a credit card space between. the bike still ride straight with this setup.
other:
i lower the bike 2" rear, so i have to cut inside part of the rear license plate bracket. i bolted the fender bracket inside out and cut off the excessive thread.
total cost: less than $500, parts from ebay
total time: 2 days, I took it easy. a friend will make it easier when installing the wheel.
I give full credit to skramnor at Deuce Owner Tech who actually did this on his Deuce, rode it for 1000 miles and then sell the modified pulley to me, so i skipped all the guesswork on the pulley. He upgraded to 06+ skinny belt.
Disclaimer: not all Harleys are created equal (actually none of them are) so these measurements are all approximately. For those who want to try the similar mod should be comfortable with a really tight clearance on belt and pulley. however, it can be done! let me know if you have any questions

Pictures: sorry for the crappy pics, my camera phone doesnt do it well in the dark:

shaving off pulley - look at the left belt-guide on the pulley - it is thinner than the right side

I have been told more than 100 times that a 2007 softail custom rim would not work! YOU DID IT DUDE! Thanks for the info. My 07 Deuce will have this on this winter thanks to your information!!! Props dude! I am going to install a 07 softail Custom pulley on mine, this will give more belt clearance since it uses a 20mm belt versus a 25 +/-mm stock deuce. Little more work but dude YOU ROCK!!

Man that looks great, Ive always wanted a Deuce and had been looking around for about a year for one. Well then I decide on a FXCWC , the front of the bike reminds me of a Deuce. I will still get me a Deuce one of these days, them bike just rule!
