Default RE: stage 1 download enough for big radius install

Just my experience and oppinion. I did the stage 1 and other friends have done it on 2006 and below models. Some of them needed a race tuner some didnt. I didnt need it. Quoting two different mechanics for HD at different dealerships. "If you see black soot inside your pipes your running ok." "If your pipes are shinny after you install then your running lean." 2nd mechanic "If your bike is running fine then their is no need to put a tuner on it." "Your bike will tell you when its running lean or sick."

Now a 3rd young tech that I am sure wanted to sell me something said yes I needed it. He also quoted a price of 1000 dollars to do it. The other two quoted below 400.00.

I didnt need a race tuner. Black soot are inside my pipes and bike runs great. Others did. I think it has a lot to do with your bike best I can figure but I promise you that you will know with out a lot of trouble.

A stage 1 download is a good starting point for all free flow A/C and free flow pipe upgrades. The only issue some folks run into like me, is with excessive decel popping with the stage 1 down load. I had to go with a SERT to reduce the popping running SEII and K&N A/C. Then had to tweak the SERT tables again when I went with the Big City Thunder Baffles.

So put your new pipes on. After about 300/400 miles, check you plugs. Pipes should have black soot on the inside as mentioned above, but that can take several thousands of miles to build up. Plugs are a faster indication of a lean condition.

do you beleive that a 'fuel pack' from vance and hines would eliminate the popping sound you mentioned on decel......the fuel pack must be an improvment from the stage 1 HD download

I just dropped a set of V&H Big Shot longs,V&H Fuel Pak and Stage 1 filter on my 08 and it made a huge difference. Tons of hole shot, (pipes had alot to do with that I'm sure), and it feelsmuch smoother throughout the entire throttle range. However I dohave a little "pop" every now and then which according to V&H can be tuned out. I have it set to factory settings now so I'll need to put just a few miles on it before I begin to tweak to get rid of that.

This is how I got the popping out and the bike to run right.. After to many calls to V&H.. I think they do alot of guessing
