Default Nostalgic Air Cleaner Cover

Has anyone had trouble installing the round Nostalgic cover on a 88B? The wish book says it will work over theSE air cleaner with the addition of another gasket. My dealersaid I don't need the gasket. But it won't go over the AC baseplate at the top when you line up the screw. It looks like if you used a thicker gasket to drop it down it might work but then the screw would be too short. I would like to do this right but I'm not sure if that is possible. Help? Thanks

I put mine on last week. I bought the gasket, but the screw wasn't long enough with it, so I have the cover on without the gasket. I haven't even fired it up yet, so I'm just guessing it'll work out ok like this. I hope I don't have to buy a $5 screw so I can use the gasket.

Who are you trying to kid? You go buy it from an HD dealer and it'll cost you $25! [sm=yikesomg.gif]

Yeah you're right. What was I thinking? $5 buys the short one that nobody needs, $25 covers the one that everybody really needs with the HD stamped on it.

Hey Old fender if you don't mind would you look and see if your cover has a cutout at the top and if so how much of the airfilter is exposed when using the gasket. I assume the gasket just shims the cover away from air cleaner base at the top. I'm also assuming somebody didn't sell me the wrong cover in the right box.

I have one on my '06 FXST. It does have the cut out at the top and exposes only about 3/8" of the A/C. I used the thicker gasket, but did not need a longer bolt. Cutting off and cleaning the old gasket was a pain in the butt. Note: Dyna's don't have the cut out, so maybe scratchit is using a Dyna version.

No, mine does have the cut out. I was just asking to try and determine ifI have the right one.

Yes, my cover has a 'cut out' of the top....

They do make 2 different models of the Nostalgic cover.

29138-91 is the one you need for the '99 and later Twin Cam engines with the SE air cleaner.

29136-91 is for the 1340 EVO's.

I'll try and get a picture of the cover/filter.

I used the stockbolt that came with the cover and it fits perfectly..

BTW, the gasket is 3/8" thick.

You guys are great! One more question. Where is the edge of the cover in relation to the 2 round 1 inch ears at the top of the air cleaner base on yours with the gasket. Does it just goin to the ears or does it enclose them within the cover? Thanks again for all the help. I've spentyesterday and today putting all my Christmas goodies on but this one is giving me fits.
