&nbsp\\;
Dear Abby.................and you too,
&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;
rode back home yesterday (about 150 miles) and '07 train was constantly running 250'+ down the highway.&nbsp\\; once off the highway the last few miles, bike got up to 275'.&nbsp\\; how hot is too hot?&nbsp\\; when does "breakdown" occur and should I look for a bucket of water to take with?
&nbsp\\;
Sincerely,
&nbsp\\;
hotter n' hell

I don't know if 275 is too hot, but I'm pretty sure cooling it off with water is a really bad idea!

275 is WAY TOO HOT. Anytime the oil temps go over 250 its additives start going away at a very accellerated rate. Once the temp hit around 275 or so dyno oil itself starts breaking down. That is why synthetics sre preferred for later model Harley engines. It can handle the higher temps much better. The additives still suffer adversly from temps over 250. But the oil itself at least will not turn to sludge on you.

I have to echo that. Abrupt changes in temperature such as throwing water on it can't be good for the metal or gaskets.&nbsp\\; The hottest I've seen my temperature get is around 250.&nbsp\\; It was fairly toasty tonight and it was at about 225 when I got home.

BS... mine runs 240-250 most of the time, hits 275+ frequently in traffic, and hit 290+ before I got the PC III (now TMAT). I do run synthetic in all three holes, but 250 is pretty routine (as is my buddy's '05 as we compare temps frequently on our rides).

Hey... shocked it took the post! &nbsp\\;I've got an oil cooler to be installed as soon as I do my next oil change, which should help cooling once it gets rolling after a stop, but seriously it still runs very hot in spite of stage 1, V&amp\\;H BSS, M1 synthetics&nbsp\\;and TMAT. We just trailered (I know!) up to Madera and did a 250 mile ride to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National parks, and our temps were pretty identical. 240-250 was pretty much the norm, and fortunately we didn't hit any real traffic to drive the temps up into the upper ranges.
&nbsp\\;
Face it - they tend to run hot out West...

I agree that 275 is way too hot. I've got a 06 standard, stage 1, sythetic,&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;runs 225 in summer, 200 in winter.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;
