I have an 03 Heritage. Ive scraped up the floorboards qite a bit durig the 2 yrs 22k miles I have put on it. Its no big deal when they scrape, kinda cool actually. They are hinged and when they scrape the pivot upward, so it does not take any traction away from the tires. My question is, since I am used to scraping, if I lean it too much, will the fixed brackets under the floorboards eventually scrape, causing me to loose traction and possibly low side?
It can happen, when the floorboards scrape that should be a warning, I scrape mine on the new Cross Bones all the time but use it as a warning to not lean any deeper.
If your brackets hit the pavement hard enough, your bike will reach a pivot point causing the rear tire to come off the ground. This means that what happens next will not be a good thing and will quite possibly leave a mark. On the positive side, you get to upgrade all the parts you smashed up.
I have some scrapes on my fixed brackets. I didn't know I did until just the other day while I was checking the amount of floorboard scrape I had. Guess I'd better be a little more careful.
It happens...like said above...If your scraping, just don't exceed that pivot point!! I haven't checked my floorboard brackets lately...but I did notice the bottom of my exhaust pipe is all scratched up!! Must have been from that trip to "the dragon".
i scrape all the time but not too hard...The day that I start scraping hard brackets will be the day I will trade in my beloved heritage and getting myself a Ducati 1098!
Switching from floorboards to forward controls reduced the chicken strip on my rear tire from 1" to 1/2". Now I lean it hard and the only thing that scrapes is the bottom of my soles.
Highly recommended.
