for chemically darkening brass . you'd still have to remove the black from the non-engraved part of the cymbal though , and if the engraving just isn't deep enough you'll run into the same problem you have with paint

the cymbal looks great as a cover , very cool idea . congratz !
Thanks for the link not_so_newbe, lots of good ideas on there which I'm gonna try. The basic problem is that the cymbal is only .030 thick to begin with, so they couldn't go deep with the engraving.

A lot people use Lacquer Sticks to color in the lettering on guns. Comes in Black, White, Red and Gold. It's pretty hard and will fill tiny details and fairly light engraving.

Here's a link to some at Brownell's or get it on Ebay.

Default Brass Also

I also have a brass A/C cover. Mine is the end of a 105MM howitzer round shaved down and the primer removed.

edit: Mine is a Dyna though, sorry used the new post option and didn't realize I was in the Softail section.

Thanks for posting pics of your splashy cover. Looks good!

Have you tried using a fine tip permanent marker? It won't last forever, but it should be able to get into the lettering.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'll try em out and one of them will work. cscoffee, cool idea with the howitzer round, looks like some engraving could be put on that flat surface pretty easily.

Default Engraving

Yeah it does have the 105MM on it, but I am in the same boat as you about how I want to fill it in.

Hey, if you mount a harmonica on the bike somewhere, you could be a rolling 1-man band.

That's pretty cool but I'd worry about people banging on it to see what it sounds like, LOL!

As for the engraving couldn't you cut clean through it and then just where the engraving is back it up with something black?
