for chemically darkening brass . you'd still have to remove the black from the non-engraved part of the cymbal though , and if the engraving just isn't deep enough you'll run into the same problem you have with paint

A lot people use Lacquer Sticks to color in the lettering on guns. Comes in Black, White, Red and Gold. It's pretty hard and will fill tiny details and fairly light engraving.

Brass Also
I also have a brass A/C cover. Mine is the end of a 105MM howitzer round shaved down and the primer removed.
edit: Mine is a Dyna though, sorry used the new post option and didn't realize I was in the Softail section.
