The Mysteries of Primary covers
OK, I have an 89 Softail, I am debating on doing a better repair on the outer primary I have, or getting a new one. The one I have was damaged sometime in the bike's history, and while the welded repair is holding, it's a booger weld that I cant' stand looking at every time I'm under the bike.
I am trying to not be the ignorant noob that wants to be spoonfed, so I did some research on the interweb.
It seems that for softails and some Dyna's, the cover is the same from 89-93, 94-99 and 2000+.. I assume the 2000+ is something unique with the Twin Cams, but what can/can't be done with interchangeability in the 89-99 range?
I have read that the starter jackshaft is different between the 89-93 and 94-99's, but what does that have to do with the outer cover? Did something with the bolt pattern between the outer and inner change? I know sometime in the 94-99 range they went from 3 to 5-bolt derby covers, but that's something I work with (been drooling over the derby p0rn thread)..
Thoughts?
