Default Half the sound of V&H Big Shots, similar dyno numbers. PICS

Not everyone wants quieter pipes, but I did. I also wanted performance. So, when I went to replace my Vance & Hines Big Shot Staggered, I did a lot of research and decided to go with the the Supertrapp Supermeg. I chose chrome even though it also comes in black. I think the whole blacked out thing is getting overdone. Anyway, it sounds very close to stock (or at least how I remember it during my test ride).

Attached are the before and after pics and also the dyno charts.

Stock: 59.7 hp / 80.9 ft-lbs
V & H Big Shot: 89.5 hp / 102.6 ft-lbs
Supertrapp Supermeg: 87.4 hp / 107.4 ft-lbs

Not surprisingly, the discs on the Supertrapp create a little more back pressure leading to a little more torque. I used all 20 discs provided. More discs = more sound and more exhaust gas flow.

I've no experience with the Super Trapp so my question may be off base.

Your statement above confuses me. Wouldn't more disks = less sound?

I like the look of the new exhaust.

more disks create more openings for exhaust gases to escape/exit. there's an end cap that blocks off the center of the disks an forces the gases out the sides of the gaps created by the disks.

Ok, I get that. Thanks.

Now, you say you wanted a quieter exhaust but then say more disks equal more sound. Did your new exhaust give you a quieter or louder sound?

Thanks

I had the same question. With all the discs installed it sounds similar to stock (quieter than V&H). Theoretically it would be even more quiet if I took some of the discs out.

I like the sound level right where it is and I think my neighbors will too. I make early morning departures and the houses here in suburban Chicago are pretty close together.

I misspoke here a little. The discs allow flow, it's the end cap that creates the back pressure.

I painted that end cap black with high temp paint. On top of that there is a polished aluminum trim ring. This little modification gives the exhaust a more traditional "open" look. I can take a picture if anyone is interested.

What other modifications were done? You didn't gain 30 hp just by changing pipes, did you?

Oh, I should clarify...

First dyno was stock.

Second dyno was 103 kit + V&H + SE AC + 255 cams + SE race tuner

Third dyno was same-as-above + Supertrapp
