Default Oil supply to external oil cooler

I have a 2000 Heritage clasic and want to ad an external oil cooler. There are 2 threaded plugs on my oil filter housing. Can I replace the plugs with nipples and oil lines (in & out) to my cooler or do I have to use a filter adapter to supply oil to the cooler??

If you use a filter adapter then you can still have an oil filter.

This is usually a good idea.
