Bought the Harley oil cooler which comes with this ugly oil filter adapter. My question is on my 2010 SG there are two plugs on the oil filter housing. Could I use those instead of the adapter for my oil lines which I would have custom made and screw directly into the oil filter housing.
I have an HD cooler and to be honest, with all the other crap down there it's not noticeable.... No one has ever mentioned it.
The answer to your question would be I'm not sure, if the plugs are both supply or demand or one of each...I do know the adapter has the thermostat in it and you do need that definately.
I have an in line thermostat in hand so that would not be a concern. Just need to know if those ports are inlet and outlet for oil flow and if so will enough oil flow to even cool. Thanks!
I just checked the shop manual and there is no mention of these plugs. I noticed them and just assumed they were for oil cooling. I often wondered how that would work because logically speaking the oil cooler needs to be installed in series, before or after the filter. So if those plugs are for oil cooling oil would have to be diverted inside the housing some how to make these passages part of the oil cuircuit, right???
You MUST use the adapter for the filter and the cooler to work. Trying to shortcut it will likely cause engine problems. besides, the adapter really is not noticeable. I have one on my 07 EGS and it looks fine.
I believe those holes were from the machining process. I think I read somewhere someone tried that and had almost no oil pressure. You need to use the adapter. Ive got one and never notice it there.
I would go by the book on this type of install. if your oil cooler was installed with a thermostat system & it had the wrong oil lines feeding it, You might end up with no oil flow until the thermostat opens!?
Im not up on the new iron out there so I hope what I am saying still makes sense.
