Default First longish ride on the Softail- Report with pics

A couple of weekends ago I took a few days off and went for a nice weekend on the Softail. Up until this point I literally had not ridden it more than a couple hundred miles in a day, just puttering around our general area.

Total trip was only a bit over 1k miles, a combination of interstate and secondary roads...dry and rainy weather. Gave me a good feel for 8 hours in the saddle for a couple of days.

Leaving out Thursday...

....a few hours and a couple hundred miles later at a gas stop.

I could have fit everything I needed for the weekend in the saddlebags and back rack. But I am partial to a backrest on longer rides, so I strapped some of my gear onto the pillion. Worked great for my old bones.

Had great weather and a great ride all the way down to the rally. (about 450 miles) After many years, and a couple hundred thousand miles on Touring models, I was just as comfortable (or maybe more) on the the Softail...only thing I missed on the interstate was the cruise...I used the throttle lock, but it's not quite the same.

Met up with a bunch of friends for the weekend.

Cool Sporty I got a shot of.

Watched some bike games...

The weekend went way to quickly!

Sunday morning getting ready to head out. It started sprinkling just as I finished packing up.

This was at my first gas stop on the way home. (had already stopped once to put on the rain gear)

It rained pretty steady all the way home. It was a great ride! I could not be more happy with how well the bike handled and rode.

Nice pictures. And it always seems to rain/sprinkle on long rides.

We went to Ft. Davis TX a couple of weeks ago, 550 one way miles and we hit some hard rain going but it was bright sunshine all of the way back. It was just my wife and me.

Always good to hear about someone's nice ride.

The bike looks awesome, by the way - very classic with the teal/cream 2-tone. Definitely been a long-standing favorite of mine.

Nice pics of your trip. I too had a 1000 mile trip last month on my Deluxe to the B B & BBQ rally in Arkansas.

I found my ride on the trip very comfortable also. I was the only softail out of 7 bikes, the rest were all touring bikes. Never got fatigued in the saddle once.

Your bike looks great and I saw one while at the rally and thought it might be yours but he did not have the Samsons. I thought I might have gotten to tell you how excellent your bike looked in person.

Rain sucks on any ride in my eyes.

With all the "negative waves" going with the recall, I never hear anything bad about rider's Heritage Softails. It's number 1 on my list to test when the time comes. It seems to be the best bang for the buck, all around bike for my needs.

Great pics, thanks for those....

Ya I think the softail makes a great touring bike. Last summer to Lacoina and back the last week to the Barber vintage fest is Alabama (1500 miles). Take the bags off and you have your cruiser back.

Thanks for the share.
Was wondering what made you go from Touring model to Softails?

Looks like you had a great time. Great looking bike too. Sorry about the rain. Just sucks way too much when you're only on two wheels and everything is slippery as hell and you can't see worth a damn.

To me, touring bikes are way too boring. They've got to put sound systems and touch-screens in them just to make them tolerable, and keep you from falling asleep.

Great looking bike and pics. I agree about the Touring models. Built for comfort, not style. Except the Road King; that's a good looking tourer.
