Default 84 XR1000 needs a larger fuel tank...

I have a 1984 XR1000 with the stock ~2 gallon tank. I need to switch to a larger tank. My question is, Is there any compatibility issues with other sportster models from that era (like the 82-94 Sportster XL)? I was looking at a King tank like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/HARLEY-SPORT...220900&vxp=mtr but their compatibility chart shows it doesnt fit the XR. So what are my options? Will a XL tank fit or will it require some modifications? Is there a difference in the XR frame compared to the XL?

Welcome to the forum , nice bike BTW.
How big do you need?
Is 2.9 gal enough?

This shows an exact fit for your bike.
I don't know the difference , I'm sure others will chime in.

Any Sportster tank that fits from '82-'94 should fit fine. Ones made to fit '95-'04 have the mounts in the same places, too, but have rubber grommets in the mounting tabs.
