my little 883 has been running lean in higher gears but ok on the low end put in a new crossover gasket (no gasket before) also picked up a dynojet kit so now i have 45slow 180dj main the question i have is to drill the slide or not to drill (dj instuctions recommended) like any input on anyone who has this kit installed also i put clip on 3rd notch on new dj needle (also recommended per instructions) dealer recommended 4th notch any info will help

At the point that you feel the bike is running lean , pull out the enrichener **** really slow and see if it acts better.
Make a mental point of the speed and throttle setting.
If it gets better at a cruise between 1/4 and 3/4 throttle , the needle should be lifted up one notch.
If it only gets better if you pull the enrichener quite a bit , then go up 2 notches.
The pilot really works at idle through 1/4 throttle.
The main jet 99% of the time only reacts between 3/4 to wide open throttle.
The needle will do the rest between the two.
See how this works first , before you drill the slide.
Drilling the slide can cause problems sometimes , it will react faster when drilled , so wait and do it last if you need to.

well i installed carb without drilling slide bike ran much better but lacked full oomph so i took carb back off drilled slide (air hole not needle hole) went to a 160dj main jet and it made the little bike come alive throttle is more snappy and not running lean anymore dont know bout mpg because its 34 degrees so i only rode for bout 10min so i ended up with 45 pilot 160dj main with drilled slide and dj spring and about 2 turns on A/F screw

OMG, you did exactly what they said not to!

I put a Dynojet kit in my bike back in 1991 when I got it, along with SE AC and SE pipes. I drilled out my slide and my bike runs just fine, and it's an 883 like yours. I forgot what jets I have, but it runs good and the plugs look good, although my mixture is set at about 3.5 turns out. Good luck.

last update i think lol changed to 160dj main seemed a little lean so put 170dj main back in and moved clip on needle from 3rd notch to 4th lots better now no carb farts and no slide flutter throttle is snappy so my setup for my carb is 45slow jet 170dj main jet dj spring with drilled slide with needle set on 4th notch and 3turns on A/F mixture screw i hope someone finds this useful it was fun learning my carb and doing my own work now its time to ride
