Default Sportster 48 fender side gap rear

What has everyone done with gap left behind from removing oem plastic. I have some copper flat stock I'm thinking about filling it with.

I left the plastic piece on the fender and used a cut-off wheel to remove the reflectors only.

I just pulled mine and left the gap...not sure if I am going to fill it with something or not.

I am definitely plugging the holes in the strut covers. Got one plug already, need to pick up 3 more.

I also left the gap. It's really not that noticable.

I think im going to take the copper flat stock I have and mill the edge leaving a small lip. then use copper rivets to hold it in place following the fender radius.

I don't understand why motor company changed the rear fenders. I have have an 04 that has the solid fender that goes below the strut, so no gap, but why o'why did they skimp out on that when it was fine to begin with. Less money on their part but charge the consumer the same kinda deal.
